Aiming High, Chinese Students Crowd Supplementary Schools

By MARILYN ALVA, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 09/15/2010 05:57 PM ET

  • If you think it's hard to get into a good college in the U.S., consider China's government-run education system, which can be even more competitive.

  • China is obsessed with test scores. It's mostly students with the highest results who are admitted to top colleges and even high schools

  • The pressure on parents in China's one-child-per-family society can be enormous.

  • If they can't get into the 10 or so elite universities in China, many students go to the U.S. to study.

  • Either way, parents want their children to learn English as well as test high academically.

  • And they're willing to pay thousands of dollars a year to send their kids to after-school and summer classes run by private education companies.

  • New Oriental Education & Technology Group runs 48 schools and 319 learning centers in 40 cities.

  • More than 1.8 million students were enrolled in New Oriental's courses, including English language, test preparation, tutoring and assessment — up 19% from a year earlier.

  • New Oriental will continue to grow faster than the 10% annual growth rate of the overall education-services market in China.

  • English-language training is a $2 billion market

  • After-school tutoring, she adds, is even larger, $12 billion to $14 billion, due to the wider age range of students, starting at age 6.

  • But newer programs in after-school general tutoring and English for younger kids, begun in 2008, are driving a lot of the company's top-line growth now.

  • Revenue in the last fiscal year rose 32% vs. the prior year to $386.3 million, with tutoring services for 6- to 18-year-olds exceeding overseas English test preparation for the first time. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 45.7% to $86.6 million.

  • Test preparation is still the most profitable business by far, with enrollment still growing 15% to 20% a year.

  • The company plans to roll out new programs for kids 6 to 12 in math and Chinese writing this fiscal year. And it'll keep adding new learning centers, more than 100 planned this year, plus about 4,000 new teachers.

  • There's no shortage of teachers in China, but salaries are trending up.

  • In the last quarter, the company added 43 learning centers in over 20 cities. Most expansion occurs in existing markets.

  • Dobell likens New Oriental's business to a retail company with lots of storefronts, not unlike Starbucks.

  • New Oriental's profit is seen growing 31% next year

So if you can create your own school focusing on test preparation or conversation English for children, you could do well if you market yourself well. Parents here spend so much money on their kids education, you made the right choice to learn English
